    It’s not uncommon for something good to be nurtured in the soil of negativity. My increasing confidence as a song-writer over recent years have seldom matched the fluctuating trajectory of how I felt about my delivery. This came to a head at the end of 2017 in an email conversation with a very old friend - also a song-writer. As positive as he was about my songs and my creativity in general he couldn’t hold back from giving it to me straight about my singing. “Why don’t you get someone else to sing your songs?”

    I was hurt and angry. “They’re not exactly queuing up?” was my knee jerk. Licking my wounds of the following weeks an idea started to germinate. Of course I was never going to stop singing my songs - it’s my passion - but I would love to hear what my songs sound like interpreted by someone else. The more I thought about the more I realised that there were quite a few great singers in my life - so I wrote them an email. To my surprise, lots of them were up for it. I made the rules - they were to choose their own song, it was OK to have duplicates, I would be involved only if needed.

    What has followed has been two years of delightful and difficult weekends where I got to deepen friendship by working together and I had to challenge my basic production skills by learning on the go. Of course the outcome is not perfect. Although at times I wanted it to be more so - it wouldn’t have been me if I’d have succeeded. My music is about fallibility and a deep seated urge to put things out there ready or not. Covered is ready enough and I am grateful and privileged for the experience.
